Katherine has always had a strained relationship with her mother, so news of her coming to stay is stressful; on top of that, she is managing a boarding house full of interesting people, including Micah, whom she finds attractive.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4.5 -- Plot has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. There are several main conflicts, and the main one (Katherine's relationship with her mother) is an uncommon one, but very powerful and important. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. Mentions of time passing are neatly woven into the story, but it was a bit hard to keep track of what month it was when it was mainly a string of things like "3 days ago" or "two weeks later."

Characters: 5 -- Relatable, realistic, interesting, dynamic characters. Even minor characters have depth, as do the relationships between characters. This is definitely a focus and a strength. I was startled at first to read from Frances's perspective (her perceptions of her relationship with Katherine were so different!) but that ended up being a wonderful thing, with the move toward healing in the end. It's largely about the complex nature of parent-child relationships (Frances with Katherine, Katherine with Lucy and Mandy, Micah with Zachary, Wilma with Beth), as well as the power of friends who speak truth in love, and the romance is just an extra touch of sweetness.

Mechanics and Writing: 4.5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. Good use of alternating POV, though it shifts between quite a few POVs, and since we get Katherine AND Frances AND Lucy, it did get a tad confusing at times who "Mama" was. Generally skillful writing.

Redeeming Value: 5 -- Well-developed, central, uplifting themes. Katherine maintains as much love as she can for her mother, though it is hard and painful. Frances is seemingly unaware of the extent and impact of her verbal abuse, and when she is made aware, she makes steps to change, with God's help and Wilma's proddings. Micah is finally able to make peace with God after years of anger when the local church demonstrates Christian love in an undeniable way. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified at all. All characters are careful to observe rules of propriety, and Katherine has a very frank discussion with Lucy about why.

Personal Enjoyment: 5 -- I loved it. It made me feel in all the best ways, and leaves me content and satisfied. One I'll definitely read again.

Very well written Christian romance, but I was so frustrated by any character's inability to confront Katherine's mother that I almost stopped reading the book halfway through. Katherine is such a strong, accomplished woman in all other areas of her life that her weakness around her mother seemed out of character. I understand respecting your elders, but there are many ways Katherine or others could have pushed back in a respectful manner instead of enabling the mother's nasty treatment. Nobody, not even the Pastor or Katherine's friends, come to Katherine's defense or help Frances to understand how her actions and words hurt a loved member of their community. Five stars for the writing, one star for continued, major irritation with everyone's willingness to enable a bully averages to a three-star rating overall.
I have always enjoyed books about our Historical past - fiction or real. This story does have a lot that Katherine had to go through, & now continues to go through, while growing up with an overbearing mother. Katherine just keeps trying to obey and respect her mother despite what may come out of her mother's mouth - which actually shows more character and kindness than most would have. This is a Clean Christian book and the dialogues between Katherine and her mother - you may not like - but it really shows how we should be. (except if happened to me, I would probably say things I shouldn't)
Katherine's husband died in an accident about 3 yrs earlier and she is trying to run a boarding house and 2 daughters 13- & a 6- yr old. And then there is a very attractive widow who has a 15 yrd old son. But there is also an older, overbearing, woman, who with her niece, come to stay at the boarding house. Various things going on & keeps you reading.
As an avid reader of African-American authors, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed reading this book. MIralee Ferrell has written a story that is quietly based and filled with spiritual revelations. This book is filled with expressions of hostility, rudeness, disrepectfulness, abuse and many other negative attitudes. Insecurities, heartbreaks, disappointments, disasters, and extreme doubt are weaved throughout this story. But Miralee's faith and spiritual foundation continually creeps into every situation without being obvious. I had to remind myself that this is a story of how God works in the lives of those that believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I originally thought that I would be reading about testimonials and goody good shoe stories. Instead, I found love, obedience, compassion, respect, forgiveness and proof that all things work for the good of those that love the Lord. I am a Believer and for that reason, I can't wait to read the other books in this series. Thank you for sharing your approach to expressing your faith in God. What a great writer you are.
“Blowing on Dandelions” by Miralee Ferrell is the story of a widow Katherine Galloway who has two girls and is trying to make a living running a boardinghouse in Oregon. Things are going well and she is keeping her head above water. Then, her domineering mother comes with her criticisms and foul attitudes. Katherine assumes she is there for a visit and is highly dismayed to find out that the woman intends to live with Katherine and her girls. Her mother causes no end of trouble both with Katherine and the other boarders.

Micah Jacobs is a widower who has come to town with his teen-age son to try to overcome his grief at the death of his wife. He starts a blacksmith shop, but keeps to himself trying not to get too involved with the other residents. When a tragedy occurs, he and his son are forced to accept Katherine’s offer to move into her boardinghouse until he can get on his feet again.

I thought this story was very engaging because of the cast of characters, and I DO mean characters, living in the house and the town. Ms. Ferrell’s sense of humor comes through in her writing. I have read most of the books in this series.
