I lost this book during a move. I like collecting books and Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of my favorite authors. It is a good novel but I always tell people to start with the first 5 books of this series. Without the basic Tarzan, the latter stories would not make sense. But "Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle" is a good read when you get to know him.Tags : Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (Tarzan, #11) [Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Abbett] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Tarzan Lord of the Jungle Tarzan #11 Edgar Rice Burroughs Robert Abbett 9780345030092 Books Reviews
More of the adventures of Tarzan. This time he's among medieval knights and ladies, with blood feuds and jousts, and of course our hero needs to reach deep to make it through. I guess there were a lot of isolated communities in the Africa of ERB's imagination. Having said that, ERB never visited Africa before writing these. He was, however, in the 7th Cav, in Arizona, which is Apache country. Tarzan is an Apache Scout, through the lens of a Victorian writer. This is great armchair adventure. If you want to go a little further, allow me to suggest Journey to the Ancestral Self The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1),The Tracker,Path Notes of an American Ninja Master,The Art of Chi Kung Making the Most of Your Vital Energy,Chi Kung Way of Power, and House of Shattering Light Life as an American Indian Mystic. These will all get you started on understanding more of what Tarzan would have had to be, had he existed in the flesh. I note related books because that is the most useful part of a review for me. I have found gems that way. I encourage others to do likewise.
More of the adventures of Tarzan. I won't duplicate what other reviewers said. This time he's among yet another lost civilization, with blood feuds and jousts, and of course our hero needs to reach deep to make it through. Burroughs wrote a lot of formulaic books, and there is no question this is one of them. He was quite fond of having Tarzan come across lost civilizations with two competing city-states, befriending nobles on both sides, and after much confusion and danger, bringing both sides together.
Many of the books with this formula use ancient Greek/Roman styles of cultures, but in this one Burroughs imagines a valley peopled by a lost expedition of the Crusades, so English Knights and their support staff have lived in a valley for hundreds of years, thriving but out of touch and out of date.
Burroughs introduces a young American character in this effort, James Blake. Blake is the first into the lost valley, and has the most contact with the Crusaders. This was a device Burroughs used many times to introduce romance into his books, as Tarzan couldn't be getting into any affairs of the heart and thus betray Jane!
Of course, the normal complex circuit of lost and endangered characters is present here, as there is another (bad) American, a Bedouin tribe intent on looting the lost city of Crusaders, young Arab lovers separated, and African tribesmen galore.
It has been a while since I read my last Tarzan book, which helps out. If you read too many back to back you tend to get tired of the formula. But if you take a rest between reads, the stories seem much more fresh. The same is true with Burroughs other series, such as the Mars series.
I found this to be quite a fun read, and can definitely recommend the book.
My Wife and I both love to read. So, was the answer! I bought a for my wife (She now has 2) and I buy all the Hardbacks (Real old school)as the mood carries me. I found the missing editions of books that I was reading in the 60’s and when I Find a new author I can get all the back issues at great prices.
I decided to try reading the TARZAN books on my and read them in order. I am so glad I did!
They are full of adventure, excitement and you care what happens to the characters in the depth of dark and dangerous Africa.
If you have missed this series of books give them a try!
